A Reflection
This past week has been a whirlwind for me personally. Navigating some challenging situations, both personally and professionally, has taken a toll on my motivation and energy levels. As someone who prides myself on staying on top of client projects, it’s been difficult to find that balance between pushing through and honouring my need for rest and reflection.
When life throws curveballs, it’s easy to feel like we have to keep hustling no matter what. There’s always that lingering guilt, thinking we should be getting more done. However, research suggests that taking time to rest and reflect can actually enhance our productivity and creativity in the long run.
Studies show that taking breaks can improve focus and performance. When we allow ourselves to step back and rest, our brains have the chance to process information and recharge. This means that when we return to our tasks, we do so with renewed energy and perspective.
But how do we know when to push through and when to step back? The key lies in listening to our bodies and minds. If you find yourself feeling constantly fatigued, struggling to concentrate, or lacking enthusiasm, it might be time to take a break. On the other hand, if a deadline is looming and you feel a surge of adrenaline, pushing through can sometimes help you ride the wave of productivity.
I’ve found that setting clear priorities helps. I ask myself what absolutely needs to be done and what can wait. Give yourself permission to rest without guilt, knowing that this time is essential for you to show up as your best self later. Engaging in dialogue with my clients has also been helpful. Most people understand and can be flexible.
Striking this balance is an ongoing journey. This week, I’ve taken some time to rest and reflect, allowing myself to move through these challenges at my own pace. I can already feel the difference in my motivation and readiness to dive back into my work with a fresh perspective next week.
One Piece of Business Advice
As I mentioned above, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and overlook your own well-being. This week, let’s prioritize our mental health.
Start by setting clear boundaries between work and personal time. Ensure you’re taking breaks throughout the day to recharge and don’t be afraid to delegate overwhelming tasks.
Remember, a healthy mind leads to a healthy career. Your well-being is the foundation of your success, so honour your needs and make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine.
One Mastery Tip
I’m loving Dr. Kristin Neff’s book, Fierce Self-Compassion. It offers valuable insights into balancing self-compassion with assertiveness. According to Dr. Neff, fierce self-compassion involves standing up for yourself and recognizing your own needs, especially in challenging situations. This week, try to practice self-compassion by being kind to yourself in moments of struggle. Acknowledge your feelings without judgment and take actions that honour your well-being.
Dr. Neff’s research shows that self-compassionate people have greater emotional resilience, lower levels of anxiety and depression, and a more optimistic outlook on life. By integrating these practices, you can enhance your emotional strength and better navigate difficulties.
Today’s Quote
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”
— Anne Lamott
Lamott’s words are a gentle reminder of the power of taking a break. Just like our devices, we function better when we allow ourselves time to rest and reset. Don’t hesitate to step back when you need to recharge. Your business will thank you for it.
One Resource
For a business-focused take on mental health, I highly recommend “The Happiness Advantage” by Shawn Achor. Achor, a Harvard-trained researcher, explores how positive psychology can fuel success in business and life. He provides actionable strategies to boost happiness and improve work performance. This book is a valuable resource for understanding the link between well-being and productivity, and it offers practical tips to create a positive work environment that fosters both personal and professional growth.
Thank you for being part of this community. Remember, your mental health is crucial to your success. Take the time to honour your needs in the week ahead.
Until next week!
